 Rodger Huiatt-  (Norwood/Norfolk  1982-83)



Rodger Huiatt grew up in Norwood, NY. He started his hockey career playing for the Norwood-Norfolk Minor Hockey Association.  He continued on to play hockey for Norwood-Norfolk High School where he was a freshman starter. Rodger went on to win several All Northern honors as well as two Section X League MVP Awards in 1982 and 1983.  In 1982 and 1983, by invitation, Rodger represented a select group of NYS players to attend two Regional development camps in Colorado Springs, Colorado prior to the 1984 Olympic Trials. 

By the time Rodger graduated from Norwood-Norfolk in 1983, he had not only received athletic honors in hockey but also was named Section X soccer MVP in 1982 and 1983, Section X Baseball MVP in 1983, and was named to the NYS High School All State Soccer Team in 1983.

After graduating from High School, Rodger chose to attend Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY.  The 1984 Northwood Team went 28-2-1 and is known as one of the best teams of all time in Northwood’s history. At the end of his year at Northwood, Rodger accepted a scholarship to attend Clarkson University where he played from 1984-88.

Professionally, Rodger was recruited to travel overseas. There, he played ten years in Austria and in Germany.  He was on the Austrian National Championship team from ZELL am See, Austria in 1991 and won an Austrian National League scoring championship in 1992 while playing in Kapfenberg, Austria.  Rodger had a brief North American professional career, where he spent time in Utica, NY, Saginaw, Michigan, and Huntsville, Alabama.  Rodger suffered a career ending injury in 1997 and returned home where he graduated from Potsdam State University with a Master’s Degree in Education.

In 1999 Rodger was named Head Coach of the Canton High School’s varsity hockey team.  After an undefeated regular season and Section X playoff championship, Rodger was named Coach of the Year for Section X in 1999.

Rodger is currently an assistant coach for the SUNY POTSDAM men’s hockey team and has been since 2007.

For the past 18 years Rodger has operated as the Director of Can Am Hockey’s Summer Youth Camps in Lake Placid. He runs many of their specialty camps throughout North America and helps facilitate the Youth Challenge Cup Tournaments in Lake Placid as well.  Altogether, Rodger has dedicated over 30 years of service for Can Am as a counselor, coach, and director. 

Rodger currently resides in Norwood, NY and enjoys his time off playing sports with his daughter Lexis and son Josh.



Rodger was inducted into the New York State High School Hockey- Hall of Fame, March 2017, for his dedication to the sport as a truly great player who has contributed noteworthy service to New York State high school hockey.

The New York State High School Hockey- Hall of Fame, located in the Lake Placid Olympic Center's '80 Rink hallway,  recognizes former outstanding Players, Coaches and Teams that have contributed noteworthy service to New York State high school hockey.
