Paul G. Bacsardi, Jr. an English teacher at Monroe Woodbury Senior High School from 1967-2000, started an after school intramural hockey program at the outdoor rink at Bear Mountain. After a few years, he developed the program into the scholastic varsity team. Bacsardi was head coach from the team’s inception to when he retired from coaching in 2013.
The Crusader team was one of the only teams in the state that practiced entirely at an uncovered outdoor rink. This changed briefly with the opening of twin rinks at Newburgh. Eventually three other teams were formed and Section Nine consisted of Burke Catholic, Newburgh, O’Neill, and Monroe Woodbury. Bacsardi was the section chairperson until ’13. Today, Monroe Woodbury is the only team left in the section.
Bacsardi’s 27 year coaching career concluded with a 315-190 record and one state championship. The team made its first trip to Utica in 1995 and lost in the first round. The second trip (‘06) the Crusaders made it to the finals, but lost again. Then, in 2007, the team won the regional in Buffalo and was successful in its third trip to the frozen four. The trip home was highlighted by a state police escort and a trip through the district’s cities with the neighboring police/fire vehicles leading the way.
Along with varsity hockey, Bacsardi coached JV Baseball, youth hockey, and coached and umpired Little League Baseball
Coach Bacsardi enjoyed all of his time behind the bench and the friendships he made with opposing coaches, but he is most proud that his teams successfully qualified for the state’s scholar athlete program each and every season.
