Mark Gilligan grew up in Potsdam, NY where he started in the sport of hockey at an
early age. Playing minor hockey in Potsdam brought many early highlights. The
participation in Silver Stick Hockey Tournaments and winning a State Bantam
Championship were two memorable experiences.

High School hockey was next as well as college hockey at St. Lawrence University and
then Senior hockey with the infamous Lake Placid Roamers.

After graduating from St. Lawrence University Gilligan began his teaching and coaching
career at Saranac Lake Central School. He coached hockey over a span of five
decades and is recognized for being in the top 15 for coaching victories in the state.

Saranac Lake was successful under Gilligan in his 31 years as Varsity coach. They
won league championships, sectional titles and advanced to the state tourneys.

Gilligan also served as President of both Section 10 and Section 7 hockey committees
over his 31 years. He was also a part of the group that organized the very first NYS
Hockey Championship in 1980 in Lake Placid.

Hockey again was most kind to him in 1978 when he was selected to lead a
subcommittee for the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.
He also had the pleasure of coaching his two sons, Ty and Trevor at the high school
level.

In addition to coaching, Gilligan was also a teacher, an Athletic Director and a Dean of
Students, all at Saranac Lake High School.

Mark was inducted into the New York State High School Hockey- Hall of Fame, March 2002, for his dedication to the sport as a truly great coach who has contributed noteworthy service to New York State high school hockey.

The New York State High School Hockey- Hall of Fame, located in the Lake Placid Olympic Center's '80 Rink hallway,  recognizes former outstanding Players, Coaches and Teams that have contributed noteworthy service to New York State high school hockey.
