 Jim McLean-  (Gates Chili 1980-2005)

Jim McLean grew up in Kenmore, New York, the oldest of four children. His parents, Lorraine and Bill, were from Toronto, so a love of hockey, both as a player and a fan, was instilled in him at a very young age. Sports in general were a big part of Jimís life growing up. He went to high school at Kenmore West, graduating in 1965. Jim was inducted into Kenmore Westís Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

His interest in education and athletics led him to Brockport State upon graduation from high school. He played soccer and hockey for four years while there. As captain of the soccer team during his senior year, he was an integral part of their unbeaten season and national ranking. He led the hockey team in scoring three of the four years and served as a captain his junior and senior years. Jim graduated in 1969 with a degree in Secondary Math Education.

He began his teaching career in the Gates Chili School District in the fall of 1969 and was a member of the high school math department for 34 years, retiring in 2003.
During his time at Gates Chili, he coached soccer for 26 years, winning four sectional titles and four trips to the final four.

With the support of the local hockey community, Jim started the Gates Chili High School hockey program as a club team in 1975. Their first varsity season was in 1980 and he served as the head coach until 2005, giving him 30 years with the coaching program. During that time, they won four division titles, two sectional championships and appeared in the final four twice. One of the highlights of his coaching career was winning his first Section V Championship in 1999 and advancing to the state tournament with his son, Brian, a senior defenseman on the team. Another great source of pride is seeing many of his former players continue their interest in hockey as coaches and referees. Since stepping down as coach, Jim has served on the Executive Committee for Section V Hockey.

Jim is extremely honored and humbled by his induction into the High School Hockey Hall of Fame in March of 2007. He would like to thank his wife, Maija, and children, Brian and Marissa, for their love and support over the years.

Jim was inducted into the New York State High School Hockey- Hall of Fame, March 2007, for his dedication to the sport as a truly great coach who has contributed noteworthy service to New York State high school hockey.

The New York State High School Hockey- Hall of Fame, located in the Lake Placid Olympic Center's '80 Rink hallway,  recognizes former outstanding Players, Coaches and Teams that have contributed noteworthy service to New York State high school hockey.
